Korea Dermatology Research Institute and the Dr. Alpha brand
A small Korean laboratory that publishes its patent numbers, its test codes and its measured values, and refunds the jar even after you have used it all.
Who develops it
Dr. Alpha is developed and operated by Korea Dermatology Research Institute Co., Ltd., abbreviated KODERE, founded on 2 November 2016 in Incheon, South Korea. The company is both the research body and the responsible distributor, which means the formulation work and the market claims sit with the same organisation rather than being split between a lab and a marketing licensee.
Seung-chang Lee is chief executive and head of the laboratory, and is the named inventor on all three of the company's registered patents. That is an unusual arrangement worth stating plainly: the person answerable for the brand is the same person named on the patent filings.
The research position
The stated position is narrow: look at the barrier rather than the surface. Most visible skin complaints that keep returning share one mechanism, which is a depleted intercellular lipid matrix in the stratum corneum. Rather than formulating separately for each visible symptom, the work is directed at the layer underneath.
That is a position, not a proven superiority claim. It explains why the product range is small and why the same formulation is offered across every size rather than split into variants for each concern.
Timeline
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| October 2016 | Patent KR 10-1620196 registered - cosmetic composition (beta-glucan and seven botanical extracts) |
| November 2016 | Korea Dermatology Research Institute Co., Ltd. founded |
| August 2018 | Patent KR 10-1891333 registered - composition for Demodex removal |
| February 2021 | First place, KSCI skin barrier cosmetics category (awarded every year since) |
| July 2021 | Patent KR 10-2279878 registered - composition for acne-prone skin |
| March 2026 | Skin Barrier Cream reformulated |
| 2026 | Sixth consecutive year at first place in the KSCI category (2021-2026) |
All three patents can be opened in full on Google Patents or through KIPRIS, the Korean Intellectual Property Office database. A patent confirms that a composition is novel and involves an inventive step. It is not an efficacy approval, and the specification is published precisely so that anyone can check what was actually claimed.
The empty-jar refund
Within 30 days of delivery, an unsatisfied customer can return the product for a refund even if the jar is empty. Round-trip shipping of 6,000 KRW is deducted and the refund is processed within three to five business days of collection.
The reason for mentioning a returns policy on a page about research is straightforward. A company that expects most buyers to be dissatisfied cannot afford this policy. It is a commitment that can be verified by taking it up, which is a different kind of evidence from a laboratory number.
